How To Clean Your Couch

How clean is your couch? If the answer to that question is “eh, clean-ish?” or “I’m just going to sit on it and not think about it”, this article is for you.

Here are some tips and techniques for cleaning your couch ranging from a light touch up to a deeper clean. If you decide you want to get it professionally cleaned, we have some suggestions as well.

For a quick touch-up:

Here’s the situation, you have a few friends coming over and spent the last 3 hours tidying up, making food, and stocking the bar. Thirty minutes prior to arrival, you realize that your couch is a tiny bit dirty.

In this situation, a lint roller or vacuum cleaner should do the trick. If you use a lint roller, simply roll it across your couch. It should pick up any small amount of dirt, hair, etc. A vacuum can not only pick up debris, but also help clean the cracks in the sofa. Use a hand vacuum or a brush attachment to a large vacuum for best results. If you need to clean the legs, a simple mix of soap and water should do just fine.

When your couch is in need of a deeper cleaning:

Like clothing, sofas often have tags that give you hints on the best way to clean them. Here are common codes and instructions for sofa cleaning:

WS: Use a mild detergent

S: Dry clean or water-less detergent

X: Don’t use water, only use a vacuum

W: Using water is ok

O: Use cold water

To clean a couch with fabric upholstery:

Mix ¼ cup of vinegar with ¾ cup of water and 1 tablespoon of dish soap. Put the solution in a spray bottle, wipe the stained area until the stain is gone, wipe with a wet towel and the dry with a clean, dry towel.

To clean a leather couch:

First vacuum the couch using the brush attachment to the vacuum cleaner. Then mix 1 tablespoon of leather cleaner with 1 quart of water until suds form. Soak and wring a cloth, wipe couch until clean. Wipe clean with just a wet cloth and then dry with a dry towel. Alternatively, use a solution of water and a few drops of white vinegar. Spray onto the couch using a spray bottle and wipe clean with a cloth. To condition the leather, mix a solution of one part vinegar and two parts olive oil. Wipe on the couch and leave overnight. Buff with a dry towel the next day.

To clean a microfiber couch:

Do not use a simple mix of soap and water as this may result in water stains afterwards. Instead, spray rubbing alcohol on the couch and gently scrub clean with a sponge or towel. If you want to fluff the couch afterwards, use a brush or the rough side of a sponge.

Try these techniques to make your couch cleaner!
